Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is the most Northerly of the Cinque Terre (or five lands) in Liguria, North Italy. As such, it is slightly less tourist-intensive than the others but as we were there in November, this may change in high season!

We based ourselves in Anita’s Rooms, a sort of B&B where you can rent a room and then have breakfast in the restaurant next door. It was excellently located and we lucked out with a balcony as the other rooms cost the same but didn’t have one and were much smaller.

With cafes and restaurants on the beachfront, Monterosso al Mare has charm as well as the extreme contrast of very large hills pressed up against the coast line. The promenade runs along the sea front in contrast to Manarola further South with its sheer cliffs and steep streets. The beaches are a rough sand and some brave souls were bathing – on the 5th November! Whilst some visitors to the Cinque Terre may prefer to be “in the thick of it” in Corniglia or Vernazza, we found it to be a great base to take the train and visit the other five lands, not to mention the Via del Amore!

On a practical note, parking a car is a massive pain in Monterosso al Mare (and even more so in the other Cinque Terre) so do as we did and take the train. If you have a rental car, a local told me that many people park their cars in Levanto which is the nearest free parking zone and then take the train; it’s only 11 kms so it takes 10 mins or less.
